Christian History

By : Rodney Howard Browne

"In the apology of Tertulian Christians are accused of what they represent. The actual reason of their accusation is the fact that they aren't not agreeing with normal ideology. It is said that they do not agree with the gods and they represent all that is malignant. All that is malignant would be murder, hate, lust, envy, and adultery. These are the very things that Christians preached against and abstained from. The genuine reason that they are faced with charges is because they have a different faith that nobody understands. It's a faith that does not consist of the same Gods. Christians assumed in the resurrection of Christ and the belief in one God, instead of the belief in several different gods that have explicit purposes. The apology of Tertulian represents how folks fear what they don't understand, and how people are not extraordinarily accepting to change at first. Whenever there is a dramatic change that calls for folks to question beliefs that they have been familiar with for years, folk are resistant. The pioneers of change are nearly always persecuted before the change begins. In this case early believers of Christianity were the pioneers of change, though they weren't attempting to convince or convince anyone in this reading. They were attempting to stand for what they believe in even if threatened with death. Not many folks in today' society would be prepared to sacrifice their life for something they intensely believe in.

Death and Martyrdom are discussed in this reading in 2 different aspects. Death is first discussed as a threat. It was a way of stopping a group from doing something that is not typically accepted. The threat exists without correct understanding of the particular group. The sole data is they are dissimilar and their beliefs conflict with practice. The main point is that folk worry that they don't understand. The Christians are mechanically charged with being the most cruel creatures when the beliefs are without delay opposing that which is cruel and evil.

This is very similar to the persecution of Socrates, who is also discussed in this reading. Socrates was charged with being a corrupter of the youth for projecting his beliefs on all who became curious. He also talked down upon artisans, poets, and politicians. When you have a population that you have annoyed and you are in trial, your arguments carry less weight.

The Christian pioneers embodied a positive nature at the time but were terribly misunderstood by many polytheistic followers. It is said that those persecuting them did not even know the way to pronounce their name in the right way. This is comparable to modern day society accept roles have reversed and now Christians are persecuting those that they don't understand before even taking the chance to understand what faith is about. Over time scriptures in the bible have been changed and misinterpreted and what is meant to be the word of God is used to project hate on people that differ. Any faith that is not Christianity is frequently rejected by Christians because they suspect that believing what they suspect is the only way to heaven, though they don't utterly practice their religion.

What you can learn from this reading is that before you make judgment on a group or somebody, or if you make a plan to persecute someone, you must at least have a correct understanding of whom or what you are persecuting. Stupidity breeds hate and what most religions are trying to achieve is peace and kindness."
