Cigar Etiquette

Have you started, or, are you considering dabbling in the world of fine cigars? If so then you've come to the right spot. If you are convinced that all you need to do is bite, light and puff on any cigar then PLEASE, read this first. While many of us cigar smokers have learned through trial and error, in the age information, a beginner shouldn't have too. Learn a little about tobacco and how to cut, light and smoke a fine cigar.

Various parts of tobacco plants are used in making a cigar. The tobacco is dried and cured before it is decided whether it will be used as filler or wrapper. The smaller, lower quality leaves and stems are used as filler for the cigar. The broad high quality leaves are used to wrap the cigar. Most of the flavor in a cigar comes from the wrapper.

Now that I have given a brief introduction of how a cigar is made, let me explain how to properly cut the cigar. Every fine cigar has a "cigar cap." It looks like a baseball cap with no bill and resides at the end of the cigar that needs to be cut.

Do not cut off the whole cigar cap but, rather, cut as little as possible with a guillotine cigar cutter. After you make your cut test the draw (how easy it is to siphon air through the cigar into your mouth). Cut a little more off the cap if you feel the draw is too difficult.

Smoking a cigar is one of the most relaxing pastimes for me. And, lighting the cigar properly is very important in order to get the most enjoyment out of the cigar. It is best and easiest to use a butane torch lighter to light a cigar.

Test the torch to see how far the flame shoots so you do not burn your fingers when you light the cigar. Grasp the cigar around its label and place it in your mouth. Keep your finger on the label because you are going to rotate the cigar as you light it. Do not aim the torch directly at the cigar but have the flame pointing up to the ceiling angled slightly towards you. Light the torch and bring the cigar to the flame. Puff and rotate over and over until the entire surface, including the edges, are completely lit. If you are a beginner, lighting a cigar properly can take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds.

Congratulations on properly lighting your cigar! Simple right? Now it's time to find a comfortable chair and practice smoking the cigar. Do not inhale the smoke! Sip on the cigar like you would a glass of wine and let the smoke satisfy your taste buds. As you exhale enjoy the aroma of the smoke. Maybe the aroma smells sweet, creamy, earthy, roasted, nutty? I don't know. You tell me! When the ash builds up to about a half-an-inch then gently knock it off on the side of your ashtray.

Smoking a cigar is not a competition to see who can finish first. In fact, if you smoke a cigar too fast you will most likely turn green and puke. But don't let that detour you, because as long as you take nice easy puffs I can guarantee a pleasurable experience. When you have finally puffed all you can take, lay the cigar down in the ashtray and it will put itself out. If you putout a cigar like you would a cigarette it will give of a very foul smell that no one will enjoy.

Next time you plan to enjoy a fine cigar, maybe on your birthday or New Year's Eve, remember what you have learned from this article. Don't cut too much off the cigar cap, bring the cigar to the torch and not the other way around and take long easy draws on the cigar, savoring ever bit.
