Clavical - What is this Bone?
|
This is why it is so important to wear proper safety gear when playing contact sports. Many football players still have an injury to the clavical even when they do wear shoulder pads as they should. Without them though the injury would be much worse. Children account for a very high percentage of injuries to the clavical bone. Some infants are born with theirs harmed due to the birthing process. Toddlers are prone to falls and so they are at a high risk of such injuries as well. There isn't much that can be done to prevent such injuries. The best course of action is to get medical attention to help heal this bone properly. You may not realize all of the benefits that we get from the clavical bone though. It mainly allows our arms to have the freedom of movement we generally take for granted. When this particular bone is injured or broken, the movement of one or both arms has to be minimized in order for it to heal. Due to the location of the clavical a person typically has several symptoms that indicate they have injured it or broken it. They include pain to that region of the body, swelling, and even being dizzy or nauseated. Typically x-rays are taken in order to determine the severity of the injury. For the duration of the healing process the area will need to be immobilized. If it doesn't heal properly you risk suffering from pain there for the rest of our life. Surgery is only needed to repair the clavical in about 10% of cases. They are often due to high impact injuries such as car accidents. When a person doesn't allow it to heal right, surgery may be necessary in order to correct it. A brace is usually put into place to allow a clavical bone to heal on its own though without surgery being necessary. For most people, some painkillers are also needed for a few weeks. Depending on the severity of the injury, it can take several months for the clavical to heal. Make sure you listen to your doctor or you risk injuring it again. Too many people take off their brace when it starts to feel better, but it is still very fragile at that point. About The Author: Tanesha is a part-time writer at www.articleclick.com.
