Clean and Maintain your Jewelry with a Few Simple Steps
|
How will you ever wear your beautiful jewelry if it's all dirty? Maybe you are scared to clean your jewelry by yourself and you can't face the high charges of paying a jewelry store to do it for you. Well the good news is that there are easy and inexpensive ways to clean your jewelry at home to restore its beauty and sparkle. Different types of jewelry may need different cleaning techniques so it is important to pay attention to what you are cleaning. Depending on the details of your jewelry, some jewelry requires more patience and more work. You will need to invest in good quality jewelry cleaner before starting. To find a good cleaner you can ask at your local jewelry store, department store or look online for some other options. Look for a cleaner that is non-abrasive and preferably one that is multi-purpose and can be used on a variety of jewelry types. Try comparing brands and prices at different retail stores or even jewelry stores. Also, try looking online for deals as well, sometimes you would be surprised on how much you will save just by purchasing off the internet. You can do some additional research at stores or online to see which brand will be most effective on the jewelry you have. When you are cleaning gold, platinum or precious gems you can usually clean everything the same way. Dip the piece into the cleaner and then rinse off in warm running water. After the piece has been rinsed thoroughly, buff it dry with a lint free cloth. This is a very simple technique that can usually restore the shine and luster to this type of jewelry. If you need to get into small cracks and crevices of your jewelry, use an extra soft toothbrush to clean the small spaces. A soft toothbrush will not scratch or damage the surface of your jewelry. Silver is a very common jewelry type, and many people have a large variety of silver jewelry pieces. The problem with silver jewelry is that it can tarnish easily when it's exposed to the air, grease and oils from the skin or other dirt in the environment. To clean silver, you can simply use a non-abrasive silver polish and apply it with a soft cloth, working in small circles until the entire area has been covered. Use a lint-free cloth and wipe away any excess polish and buff the piece until shiny. Many people think that they can keep silver jewelry un-tarnished and clean by keeping it in a box and not wearing it. In reality, silver jewelry will stay shinier longer if it is worn regularly. Remember when you are cleaning your jewelry to be careful of porous stones such as rubies, emeralds, pearls, coral, turquoise and lapis lazuli. Do not use jewelry cleaner on these stones as you could ruin the surface and shine of the stone. It is best to take these items to a professional, unless you are certain of the cleaner that you are using. You do not want to ruin the shine and surface of precious stones, such as rubies and emeralds because they are very expensive to begin with. I highly recommend bringing them in for professional jewelry cleaning. Store your jewelry in a jewelry box to protect the items inside from dust, dirt, hairspray and perfume sprays in your bathroom or bedroom. By keeping them in a jewelry box, they are not exposed and they are protected. Your jewelry will stay beautiful for years to come!
