Copal is based in Tokyo and back in 1946 it opened its doors. Its first design was a #0 leaf shutter that was designed to fit the Nippon Kaguku camera. This camera never made it to market but that didnt stop the shutter from making it to market. In 1949 KK Copal Koki Seisakusho was established. In 1962 it changed its name once again to K.K. Copal which was considerably simpler and easy to remember. In 1998 they were bought out by Nihon Denshi and the name changed once again to Nihon Denshi Copal K.K. and then in 1999 it changed yet again to Nidec Copal. With all the name changes over the years it became difficult to keep them in the radar Today this full range of shutters is still used on view and TLR cameras. Here you get superb quality at a fraction of the cost of Compur shutters. There are many variations of this shutter ranging from a style that uses a simple inertia gear set that regulates the speed to much more in-depth setups as seen in the MX series that uses a scapement and offers a wide range of speeds. They also introduced a shutter that was designed for SLR cameras. The Copal square vertical travel shutter with the metal curtains was the most popular model. There Copal MX was introduced back in 1955 with the MX dual synchronization with a B 1/300 speed range. In 1956 they introduced a new version with 1 1/500 speed. They called it the Copal MXL then followed by the MXV and its speed was the fastest in the industry. The MX with its excellent range of speed has become one of the most popular shutters on the market. Certainly over the years other comparable products have come to market providing competitive products. What you need to do is determine what it is you need in a shutter and then start searching online to find a product that will work for you. Once you have found all of them it is time to start price comparing. It wont be long before you have discovered the best shutter at the best price.
