Cracked Lips: How To Solve A Painful Problem

Unlike the rest of the skin, the lips have less protection, missing the natural oils that cover the rest of the human skin. That is why the lips often crack and get dry causing much discomfort and pain. Here are some tips that can help you deal with your cracked or dry lips.

The cracked or dry lips symptoms vary from painful lips to bleeding cracks and open soars. You may also have the need to lick your lips more often or feel that your lips are more sensitive than usual.

Cracked lips have a variety of causes, and knowing some of them can assure that you protect your lips and prevent them from cracking or drying out. The most common cause for cracked lips is dehydration. Without water the body cannot soften your lips and they became cracked or dry. In extreme temperatures, very cold or very hot, your body will suffer a more intense dehydration. Extended sun exposure may cause sun burns, and wind may damage them, too.

Smoking, cosmetics or chewing gum are among the habits that can also be responsible for your cracked lips problem. Keep in mind that all things that touch your lips for extended periods, like cigars or lipsticks may have negative effects on your lips condition.

Lack of vitamins, especially A, B, C and B2, can be one of the causes of the problem. Those vitamins are needed by your body in order to assure the lips with the proper health and care.

Another common cause is touching your lips with very spicy ingredients, like hot chili. This will cause burns, pains or cracks on softer lips and even dry them out for some time.In rare cases, dry or cracked lips may be the warning signs of a more serious condition. If your lips condition does not seem to relate with any of the above causes, and keeps repeating for prolonged periods of time, then you should check with a doctor and run some tests for any of following illnesses: diabetes, macrocytosis, kawasaki disease, sjogren's syndrome and even STD's.

In case that you think that a serious condition may be the problem, go see the doctor and run some specific tests. Do not wait for too long before doing so, as most of the serious conditions have a better chance of treatment when discovered in their early stages.

If your lip cracking problem has a common cause, then you may want to stop the licking habit right away. Drink lots of liquids to increase your body's hydration level. Using a glossy lipstick, lip balm, petroleum jelly or aloe vera cream may ease your pain and protect your lips from further damage, giving your body enough time to repair the damage.

You may also think to keep an humidifier in your house if the air is too dry and start protecting your lips when exposed to intense sun for a long time, just like you do with the rest of your skin. Reduce the use of cosmetics and add more vitamins to your diet to increase your lip health and resistance.
