Creating Your Shopping List

When creating your shopping list for the weekly grocery trip, do you just jot things down as you think of them? Or do you try to take some extra effort and time to sort the shopping list into store sections?

Though we know it would make the shopping trip significantly easier to have our list sorted into groups of items that will be found near each other once we are at the store, few of us take the time to do this.

One of the reasons few people take the time to sort through their list and reorder according to location within the store is because without a lot of additional effort, this task usually at least entails rewriting the list once it has been completed the first time. This way, items are rearranged so that you can get everything you need without having to circle the same portions of the store several times.

There are many types of computer software programs that can really help you make your shopping experience more convenient as well. Though these are a little more difficult to configure for store layout ease of use, they can track and aid you in a number of other ways.

For example, many of the popular grocery list software programs allow you to save lists according to weekly, monthly or yearly shopping trips. This can save you a lot of hassle when doing the holiday shopping trip, where many of the same items need to be purchased every year.

Also, many of these shopping software programs either come with or can be configured to interact with nutrition related software programs. This is a great help for people trying to eat healthy, as not only are all of the nutrition facts kept track of, but the larger picture of what is bought in a week or a month, can be analyzed, nutritionally.

These types of shopping and nutrition software suites generally already have all of the nutritional information for popular products filled into the appropriate categories. All you have to do is choose the serving size, if you are figuring things for an individual meal, or simply the variety if you are figuring nutrition facts for an entire shopping trip or period of time.

If you are not ready for using computer software to help you in your shopping trips, then even just taking the time to rearrange things by location within the store can save an immense amount of time and frustration. Simply take your completed list and mentally see yourself walking through the store. Rearrange your list of items in such a way that you will naturally encounter each item, as well as all of the items in the same area, as you come to them.

Then again, what’s wrong with getting some extra exercise. If going back and forth across the store doesn’t bother you, then why not see it as an opportunity to get that exercise you always say you don’t have the time for? Hey, some people go to the mall to walk and get exercise, you can go to the grocery store for yours, and get some needed shopping done at the same time.

In either case, it is good idea to write things down as you think of them. This way you’re not sitting there trying to remember everything you thought of over the last week when it’s time to make up a grocery shopping list.
