Dangers of Tanning Beds

Many people think that the dangers of tanning beds are far less than the dangers of tanning in the sun. Unfortunately, there are even people who believe that tanning beds present no danger at all. When you know why skin tans or burns, then it is easier to understand the dangers of tanning beds, and why you should be careful, or even stay away from them altogether.

When the skin is exposed to the sun, it starts to produce a substance called melanin to help protect itself from too much ultraviolet light. Melanin travels up to the top layer of your skin, the epidermis, and the cells in the epidermis absorb it. When melanin is exposed to ultraviolet A light, it darkens due to oxidation. This is what causes a tan. So basically, a tan is your skin trying to protect itself, and it cannot differentiate between protecting itself from indoor or outdoor ultraviolet light. When the exposure to ultraviolet light is too severe and too prolonged, then sunburn develops. A sunburn is a radiation burn there is no way to sugarcoat that. You can absolutely get a sunburn from tanning beds. Knowing these things, it is easier to understand the dangers of tanning beds.

The dangers of tanning and burning in the sun are fairly well known to most people, thanks to public service announcements by medical groups, and warnings from individual doctors. Skin cancer is the major concern. Long periods of exposure to the sun or a tanning bed, especially when there is sunburn, can greatly increase the odds of developing skin cancer. On the other end of the spectrum, ultraviolet rays cause skin damage; eventually resulting in premature wrinkles, deep lines, and a leathery complexion.

The dangers of tanning beds are proven and documented. So why is it that so many people still flock to tanning salons and use these beds every day? One reason, of course, is social pressure. For a very long time, the tan has been touted as healthy and attractive. Though it is true that we need sunshine to help our bodies produce vitamin D definitely an essential vitamin it is not true that the more you tan, the healthier you are. We need very little sun each day to be able to produce vitamin D. The misguided notion of pale skin equals unhealthy person must be discarded. Skin can be light and the person can still be healthy. The health shows in the eyes, the pink hue of the cheeks...the resiliency of the skin.
