Dashboard Repair: Fast And Inexpensive Methods



Dashboards get cracked in time, and the color repair kits of vinyl fill do not work too well on them. What happens after you fail to repair the cracks using these methods is that the cracks tend to spread even further, which is exactly the opposite of what you had in mind. A good and fast method to maintain your car dashboard in well shape is to use silicone caulking. This substance has the ability to remain flexible, which will allow the cracks to expand and contract without becoming wider. Here are some tips on how to repair the cracks in your car dashboard, fast, easy and inexpensive.

Before getting on with the repairing process, buy the necessary stuff which includes an utility knife, some painters' tape, silicone caulking and some vinyl paint. As you can see, you do not have to break the bank to repair your car dashboard.

The first step is to dig a little in the crack with the utility knife, so you can make room for the silicone caulking to enter. Try to make a �v' cut in each crack, but avoid cutting too much, as it will make the crack wider.

After that, clean the area that will be repaired with silicone caulking. Remove debris and any other particles on the inside and the outside and let the surface to dry well before anything else.

In order to protect your vinyl dashboard of the action of silicone caulking, add painters' tape on each side. This way, silicone will enter just the crack and it will dry up well.

Once you prepared the area for repairing, you can pour the silicone substance into the crack. It will take about one quarter of an hour for the silicone to dry. Then you can safely remove the tape. For smaller cracks, this is the final step. But, if the crack is wider and the silicone repair job is too visible, you can use a vinyl repair kit to add texture the silicone. You must do this before getting the tape off and before the silicone gets the chance to dry up.

To mask the cracks that are too big, a good idea is to use some motor car vinyl paint. They will become less visible this way. A word of advice would be to let the silicone rest for about two hours before doing this.
