At the risk of sounding hopelessly romantic, it has to be stated that post-divorce dating is booming. This is a phenomenon not only in the UK, but all over the world. In India (where divorce rates are still relatively low despite the rise in the number), a matrimonial website for divorcees was one of the most popular sites of 2007. It was flooded with hopeful divorcees who wanted to meet online, get to know other people in the same boat, take some more time in building a relation, and then tie the knot again if all goes well.

How to Start Dating Again

But how does one start dating again? It is not as easy as people make it sound; for that matter, anything to do with human beings is never quite easy. One gets completely cut off from the dating scenario after marriage, and those who want to stage a comeback after a long conjugal life are totally out of touch with the fine art of dalliance. These are a few ways in which one may get started again:

• The first thing to do is to pull yourself out of the post-divorce stupor. Look truth in the face. Your marriage is broken, the hearth fires are no more burning and your partner is gone. If you like being alone for the time being, that’s fine, but if you are aching with loneliness, there isn’t much use brooding over the way of life that is gone.



• Once you have come to terms with reality, it is time to conquer the butterflies in your stomach. It is natural to feel nervous, anxious and doubtful about venturing out again. Chances are that you may start feeling like a capital fool when you walk into the parlour for a makeover at forty-five. But it is worth it. Do all that it takes to overcome the initial awkwardness and pamper yourself a bit, it will count when another person starts taking interest in you again.



• If you are still feeling unsure and shy, the internet is a great way to start. You can have two kinds of approach – look for other divorcees / widowed people – or approach dating in general. Once again, there are two kinds of sites you may look at – those dedicated to dating – and more open social networks where you may get a friend, and eventually a partner.



• Whatever your approach may be, it is strongly advisable that you do not hide your divorcee status on the net. You do not want to develop a relation with someone who takes you to be a virgin and then finds out you have had more than enough of the conjugal experience. Be honest with the whole thing and there can be no better way to start.



• You can approach a dating agency, but make sure it is not a seedy money-making scheme with the wrong sort of people associated with it. It is always better to approach these companies through reference. Avoid blind dating if possible, it may be risky.

• Almost everyone who has gone for post-divorce dating claim that is a great healing touch for them. It reaffirms their belief in life and rebuilds their confidence. It also has a therapeutic effect, if approached correctly.



• It is your way of telling the world and yourself that life will go on. Dating is not just about young people sitting in a park and staring into space; it could also be two people in the fifties sharing an intelligent conversation over a cup of coffee.



• Children, work, and memories of the past are not all that makes up life. This is your chance of getting your identity separated from your previous partner and venturing out as an individual again.
