Dealing with the problem of neonatal acne
|
Neonatal acne is more common in baby boys than baby girls but in fact both sexes can and do develop acne. The first acne problems often occur when the baby is between two and three weeks old, but sometimes these problems can occur in babies up to six months of age. In most cases these problems with neonatal forms of acne will resolve on their own, and in most cases additional treatment will not be needed. If treatment is needed, however, there are a number of products on the market to deal with this common problem. As with any type of treatment regimen, it is important to seek the advice of your family doctor before beginning treatment for your new son or daughter. While the exact causes of the various forms of acne are still under discussion, and much research into the causes and treatment of acne are still ongoing, neonatal acne is thought to stem from the same roots as the more common acne which is often seen in teenagers and young adults. Acne, both the neonatal variety and the traditional kind, is caused by changes in hormones, and while the hormonal changes that trigger acne outbreaks are more likely to occur during puberty and adolescence, a number of important hormonal changes are known to take place in the weeks following birth. In fact, the two to three weeks following birth are a busy and exciting time for every newborn baby, and it simply stands to reason that some of the hormonal changes taking place could trigger the pain and discomfort that can be caused by acne. The key to treating neonatal acne is to determine the nature and extent of the problem and to use that information to determine the best course of treatment. As we said, in many cases these cases of acne will clear up on their own, so it is important to discuss the matter with your doctor to see what type of treatment may be necessary.
