Deck Installation

Once you have determined your decks basic design youll need to decide whether youll do your deck installation yourself or hire a contractor. You can save a bundle if you are at all handy and can take care of the project yourself.

The very first thing you will need to do is to decide on your materials. Generally pressure treated lumber is used which could be cedar, redwood, or pine. What type of lumber you choose to use on the visible part of your deck will have a lot to do with your budget and what you want the finished deck to look like.

You will need to determine how much materials you will need. Each deck is slightly different but these instructions will give you the basic steps. This deck is not more than six feet off the ground and attached to the house. This is only for instructional purposes always check with your local district for building codes in your area.

When you are determining your material needs you will need to determine how much material for the actual deck as well as the joists and beams. How many beams you will need depends on the size your deck is going to be and the building code in your area.

Once all your material has arrived its time to get busy. Your first step will involve preparing the soil where the deck is going to go. This will include removing any sod and leveling the ground. You will also need to calculate the correct slope so that you have proper drainage. Youll need to put down 6 mil black polyethylene to keep the weeds from growing through under the deck.

Now layout your perimeter materials and to establish your exterior markings use string. Put a small post marker in each corner and then run a taut string from one post to the other. This clearly establishes your exterior boundaries and leaves no room for error.

Now you can start building the substructure which includes the footing and piers. You will need to use a plumb bob from the sting which will establish the footings location. You footing holds need to be deeper than the frost line for your area.

They have to be deep enough to sit on soil that has not been disturbed. Its a smart idea to go another three to six inches deeper and then place gravel in this area for good drainage.

You will need to concrete in your posts. Once the posts have set its time to start building the upper structure. The blocking you will need is dependant on the building codes for your area.

Once you have the frame installed you can start laying the decking. Stagger your joints side by side so that the do not line up. You need to notch the boards against the posts leaving at least 1/8 spacing for the perfect drainage.

Once the decking is down its time to put the railing up. Different regions have different code for the minimum and maximum height. Your railing will add the finishing touches to your deck.

Now that your deck installation is complete you can enjoy it from the comfort of your patio furniture sipping your favorite drink.
