Decorating Ideas for Dining Rooms

In many houses the dining room is a room that is only used on special occasions. Many families eat only in the kitchen or in some cases in the living room or bedrooms. The lack of use leads many to overlook decorating in the dining room. They believe that because it is a room that is rarely used that it does not require the same attention as other rooms in your house. This is true until major holidays or other occasions when the homeowners wish to use their dining room. It is then that they lament the lack of decorating that they did in their living room. The decorating possibilities are almost countless when it comes to dining rooms. You can choose to decorate the dining room in a modern style, in an old fashioned style or in an outdoorsy way. These are just three of the options available for decorating a dining room and turning this room into a focal point in the house.

A dining room that is decorated in a modern style can be very appealing to the eye. Choosing black lacquered furniture placed on a sleek hardwood floor with minimal accessories can be one way to decorate a modern dining room. Opting for a square table that seats four to eight guests instead of the more traditional rectangular table also creates a modern appeal. In this type of dining room, you may wish to adorn the walls with bold paintings that are very modern and vibrant. This will be a stark contrast to the dark furniture. A chandelier with a geometric shape adds lighting to the room but contributes to the modern décor.

Those with a more traditional style may wish to decorate their dining room in a more old fashioned way. Furniture in a dark brown wood set on a hardwood floor that is a lighter shade of brown sets this look. A rectangular table with intricately carved legs is a key element in an old fashioned dining room. This table will usually seat six guests with two guests at either end of the table in a high backed chair with armrests and the two guests on each side of the long end of the table sitting on high backed chairs that do not have armrests. Additionally, an antique chandelier adds to the atmosphere of the room. Classic paintings or artfully framed prints of historic works of art are excellent accessories in an old fashioned dining room.

A dining room that invokes the feel of the outdoors can be another way to decorate a dining room. Missionary style furniture with a rectangular table that is longer than a traditional dining room table helps to set the mood for this type of room. The table could even be long enough to fit three chairs on one side of the long edge of the table with a bench along the other end to seat an additional three guests. With two additional guests sitting at each end of the table, this table can accommodate eight diners. Paintings or photographs of mountains and trees framed in rustic picture frames help to decorate this rustic living room. Another tip for creating an outdoorsy feel is to tile the floor in a tile that has an earthy tone.

However you choose to decorate your dining room, it is sure to be a location for many happy, family memories. Putting special effort into decorating this room makes it a room that you want to use more often. Try decorating your dining room in a way that appeals to you so that you will be inclined to utilize your dining room for everyday occasions.
