Decorative Blinds Add Function and Style Your Windows

Once only considered for industrial, office and institutional applications, blinds have recently resurfaced as a hot decorating item that offers both function and style. Anyone who has lived in a first floor bedroom, or in a house with close neighbors, understands the need for window coverings to provide privacy. Often this comes at the price of reduced sunlight. Blinds, however, can provide privacy from prying eyes while still providing the amount of light you need. That is because blinds perform two important functions — controlling light and providing privacy with more versatility and control than other types of window coverings.

For the most part, curtains, draperies and even shades offer an “all or nothing" solution for your windows, the only control over light is obtained by how far open they are. On the other hand, blinds offer many degrees of light control and visibility of the outdoors. Strong sunlight can be filtered while the view of the garden is still maintained. Darkness and privacy can be obtained quickly and easily.

Today's blinds also come in a variety of materials, including traditional aluminum, plastic, and wood. Slats can range from the min-blind size of less than an inch, to wooden blinds in widths of 3 inches or more. Pastel colored linds for the Victorian home can be further softened with a ruffled valance. A more masculine or traditional room could have highly polished wooden blinds. Several companies even offer “wood look" blinds that fool the eye and spare the pocket book. Vertical blinds with a matching cornice are still the standard in a modern décor, and almost required for any home with a sliding glass door.

Most people don't think of shutters when they think of blinds, but shutters are a type of blind mounted inside a wooden frame. Shutters can adjust for light or open wide for an unobstructed view, and add just the perfect touch to that country or shabby chic décor.

The blinds you pick for your room will depend on many factors, including your decorating style and budget.

Before shopping for blinds, there are several factors to consider. For example, do you want your blinds to be mounted outside the window frame, or inside the window frame? This is important to consider if you have decorative molding around your windows that you want to show off. Inside mount shades also need to be carefully measured for width to fit in the space in front of the window and inside the molding. Blinds mounted outside the window frame may need a decorative cornice over them, to give a more finished appearance. For homeowners considering replacement windows, there are even blinds mounted inside the replacement windows, for years of dust-free, cord-free service.

Some other factors to consider are how much use the room gets, and how many times a day you may be making adjustments to the blinds. This will help you get the most durable blinds for your needs. In addition, there are important safety concerns for homes with small children, as dangling cords can be a dangerous temptation. Even homes with no young children need to think about visitors and pets, who also can be drawn to that tempting cord. Electronic blinds can eliminate cords all together, and go up and down at the touch of a remote control.

After choosing the style, type and color for your blinds, it is a good idea to have the windows professionally measured. This will save costly mistakes, assuring the homeowner of quick installation and years of privacy and light control.
