Delayed Period: What Does It Mean?

Many times, a delayed menstruation is interpreted as a sign for pregnancy, but this is not always the case. There are women that have troubles with delayed periods without being pregnant, and this is what this article is all about.

A definition of delayed period

In medicine, lack of menstruation or delayed menstruation is named amenorrhea. There can be many causes for that, but stress, inadequate eating habits or even excessive exercising can contribute to the appearance of amenorrhea. Women are advised to pamper themselves a little when it is that time of the month and to take their time before the period must arrive. A bath with essential oils can help, especially when using Ylang-Ylang, which is known to contribute to the uterine contractions.

Another measure that can be taken is to stay among other women that are menstruating, as the pheromones released can trigger a response in your body, and period may appear.

Known causes

When the period is delayed, most women think of pregnancy. In order to establish if this is the case, a pregnancy test can be used, as they are quite accurate. If the result turns to be negative, then the cause must be searched somewhere else. One reason why menstruation fails to appear is a delay of the ovulation process. The natural cycle of the body can occur only with ovulation first and menstruation after. A period appears only after two weeks have past from ovulation and this is the natural flow of things. When you experience delayed period, and you are not pregnant, you just need to relax and wait.

Plants that can help

Natural remedies can be tried in order to make the menstruation get on schedule. You need to understand one thing first, however. No herb can determine the menstruation to start, unless the natural cycle is over, and ready to start again. But, if the blood is there, and for some reasons, the uterus contractions did not start yet, natural remedies can help. Parsley is recommended, for instance, as drinking several cups of tea made of parsley a day can help the process to begin. The plant is rich in minerals and vitamins, like calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin A, which contribute to the well being of the body altogether. Tea made of dandelion root or burdock root can help, as well. A word of caution is needed, though: women that have delayed menstruation because they are pregnant must not try herbs to determine menstruation as they can hurt the baby.

Extreme cases

If three months have passed and menstruation did not occur, then the problem can be really serious. Usually, eating disorders can influence the body up to the point of rendering it unable to menstruate. Also, other conditions can be related to the lack of menstruation for such an extended period of time, like diabetes, or thyroid deficiency. Now it is not the time to turn to herbs to solve your problem, it is time to see the doctor, as this is a serious condition that cannot be taken lightly. Your physician will ask you to do a series of tests to determine why this happens. Only after specific tests are run, like hormonal assays and trans-vaginal ultra sound tests, the gynecologist can establish the cause of your problem.

Period and exercise

Some sports can be related with delayed menstruation. Usually, gymnasts and dancers experience problems with delayed menstruations, as well as with eating disorders, or osteoporosis. Studies have shown that synchronized swimmers, even if they face the same physiological and aesthetic demands as the other categories shown here do, they rarely have problems with amenorrhea.

The answer that could clarify things establishes three points in why swimmers are not as affected as gymnasts and dancers. They immerse their bodies in cold water, which allows them to better control their temperature. They also present a high level of body fat, which is one of the deterrents of amenorrhea. Plus, they do not experience the same nutrition restraints as the gymnasts and the dancers do, which helps them avoid troubles with delayed menstruation.
