Dental Implants: The Best Option for Replacing Lost Teeth
|
People lose their teeth due to: - Tooth decay - Root canal failure - Gum disease - Excessive wear and tear - Congenital defects - Accidents Advantages of Implants Dental implants present several distinct advantages over fixed bridges and removable dentures, the other two options for tooth replacement. Implants are a more permanent solution to your problem. While bridges and dentures must be replaced every 7-15 years, dental implants will last a lifetime. They are also much more aesthetically pleasing. They look and feel like your real teeth. Removable dentures have a tendency to slip, creating embarrassing clicking sounds when you eat and speak. Fixed bridges rely on your adjacent teeth to support the implant, causing bone decay over time. Since dental implants fuse with your bone, they eliminate these problems. Implants can be used to: - Replace a single tooth - Replace several teeth - Replace all of your teeth Am I a Candidate? You are a good candidate for dental implants if you: - Have one or more missing teeth - Have a fully-grown jawbone - Have enough bone to secure the implants - Have healthy oral tissues - Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures If your jawbone is too soft or lacks the necessary thickness to secure the implant, you still may be a candidate for surgery. By using a bone graft, you can compensate for these deficits in your jaw so that you can enjoy the benefits of dental implants. In this procedure, a piece of bone is taken from a different part of your body and moved to your jaw. Over a period of six to nine months, the grafted bone will grow, providing you with a suitable reservoir to hold the implant. Implant Procedure Dental implant surgery is a time consuming process that will need to be completed in several stages. The entire process will take three to nine months. First, a cylinder gets implanted into your jawbone. To accomplish this, an incision is made in your gum and holes are drilled where the cylinder will be installed. This cylinder will become the root for your new tooth. Your mouth will take several months to heal. During this time, your jawbone will grow into the surface of the implant. This is called osseointegration. In the second stage, your gum is reopened and an abutment is attached to the implant. Your gums need a few weeks to heal before you can complete the third and final stage of the process. In this final stage, a crown is placed on top of the abutment. This will function as your new artificial tooth. Dental implant surgery is a very safe procedure. Problems rarely occur, and if they do, they are usually easily corrected.
