Dental Implants a Better Choice than Bridges
|
While many people with missing teeth are still candidates for bridges, they must have existing teeth on each side of the gap where the tooth is missing. These teeth serve as anchors, or abutments, for the bridge. A prosthetic tooth, called a pontic, is placed to fill the gap, and each end of the bridge is bonded to the anchoring teeth, which are also reduced in size by the dentist. Bridges can last more than a decade when cared for properly, but patients must be aware of decay around the bridge, as well as any damage that might occur to the bridgework. Dental implants do not rely on abutment teeth to act as anchors. This is because it is an artificial tooth root, made from titanium, with a porcelain crown attached to the implant. There are two types of dental implants. The most common implant is placed directly into the jawbone, and is called an endosteal implant. This type of implant is done for those who have good bone density and volume. The second type of dental implant is called a subperiosteal implant, and is place on, rather than in, the jawbone. It is placed beneath the gum tissue and protrudes up above for the placement of the crown. This type of dental implant is performed on those whose bone density and volume is less than desirable. In both types of dental implants, the crown is custom-made. It can take several months for the implant to fuse to the bone to fix it in place, so patients will wear a temporary tooth until they are fitted with their porcelain crown. Even after ten years, patients will have a very high success rate for their dental implant. Advantages of Dental Implants There are several advantages of dental implants over bridges or dentures. - Looks more natural - Easier to clean and care for than bridges or dentures, leading to better overall periodontal health - Better alignment with your jawline - Flexible placement since dental implants don't need existing teeth next to them - Replacements are not needed as much as bridges or dentures, giving them better cost effectiveness in the long run In the end it is up to you to decide if dental implants are a better option than bridges or dentures. Your dentist will discuss the advantages with you to help you make an informed decision. Missing teeth can harm your periodontal health if left alone for too long. Dental implants can help maintain the functionality of your teeth, such as speech and chewing, you may have been having trouble with due to missing teeth.
