Diabetic Foods To Avoid: Some Simple Rules



Diabetes is a serious condition that impose certain rules in life to be abide to. Among those, the foods that people with diabetes should avoid, are an important part.

Here is how a diet for diabetes should look like. It should contain lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as carbohydrates. The foods that must be avoid are fats, sugar and salt.

Actually, people with diabetes are not forbidden to eat any of the foods that exists, but they just need to be careful about them. Some cakes and biscuits can be eaten from time to time, at least as this does not become a habit.

Allowed foods

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, which helps releasing energy slowly into the body, while reducing the need for insulin. A diet rich in onion, garlic, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes is very good for diabetes. Many fruits are recommended in diabetes, like kiwi, pomegranate, guava. The only concern is that fruit juice can rise the level of sugar in the blood rapidly, and it must be consumed with a meal. Some honey may replace the sugar from a diabetes diet. Some rice is allowed, as well as a little olive oil. A good hydration is also recommended, by drinking enough water each day. Fish, condiments like mustard or spice, raw vegetables, and low fat dairy, are also to be included in the diet.

Foods to be avoided

If you suffer from diabetes, you should not eat too much processed food, or junk food. Ice cream, soft drinks and fried foods must also be eliminated.

Salt and preservatives are not good for a person with diabetes.

Smoking and drinking alcohol are two habits that have be excluded.

Even sugar free sweets must be avoided.

Pies and cakes are not something that should be in a person's diet, if they have diabetes.Potatoes must not be a large part of this diet, as well as peas and beans.

Dairies rich in fat are to be avoided.

Some fruits like bananas, grapes or strawberries are too sweet for a person with diabetes.

You can eat cottage cheese only in small amounts.

Packaged foods are not good, neither.

Juice made of fruits is not as good as the fruits themselves, which are rich in fiber.

When dining out

When dining out, you must be careful about what you consume. Large portions should not land on your table, and fried foods are out. Drink water instead of sweetened drinks, and avoid mayonnaise. Salad dressings may be rich in fat, so be careful about those. Try to eat less and only low fat foods. Salads without fat dressing are a good choice, and a little attention about the size of your portion will do you good.
