Dictionary Resource Tips
|
When considering a dictionary, it's important to ask yourself some important questions in order to determine which type of dictionary will work best for you. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether you're looking for a dictionary that will help you with spelling common words or whether you need a dictionary that contains an exhaustive list of words that are both common and uncommon in the language that interests you. You should also ascertain whether you are interested in definitions and spellings only or whether you prefer a dictionary that contains additional information such as maps, sketches, diagrams, notes, etc. Finally, ask yourself whether you're interested in finding information related to slang terms and phrases because not all dictionaries carry slang as a matter of course. There are three main types of dictionary resources. The standard type of dictionary that you are probably most familiar with is the old hardback or paperback version that can be purchased in just about any bookstore in the country. The quality, coverage and price of these types of dictionaries tend to vary. A small pocket size dictionary can be picked up for well under $5; however, it may or may not contain all of the entries that you need; depending on its intended use. Larger, more comprehensive dictionaries are available for most languages as well as specialized categories; however, depending on the type and size of dictionary that interests you; you might be looking at a larger price tag. Dictionaries are also available in software versions and can be expensive to non-expensive; once again depending on the size and breadth of the version that you purchase. Unless you need a specialized type of dictionary with interactive features, there is not much in a software version to recommend it. Most word processing programs contain a dictionary feature that is extremely convenient. The only disadvantage to this type of dictionary is that it may not be very comprehensive, depending on the particular program that you are using. Finally; there is almost an unlimited amount of dictionaries to be found online. Many of the online dictionary versions are quite similar to the dictionaries you would find on your local bookstore; however they have been placed on-line to provide convenience of use. Depending on the dictionary that you choose, there may or may not be a usage fee attached. Most on-line dictionaries have no usage fee attached whatsoever. A great advantage to on-line dictionaries, besides the fact that they are commonly free to use and tremendously convenient, is the fact that many also come with handy features such as multi-lingual searches and the ability to translate it into several different languages. On-line dictionaries are also available in broad categories such as dictionaries that are targeted toward specific fields including food, science, math, law and medicine. You can also find dictionaries on-line that are more directed toward entertainment pursuits, such as dictionaries that are designed to assist with the completion of cross-word puzzles, creative writing and word games such as Scrabble, Hangman and Boggle.
