Different Types Of Poems: Short Classification

There are many ways in which poems are written. If you are interested, here is an article on different types of poems.

What is poetry?

A large part of literature consists of poetry, which is a way of telling a story or exemplifying an idea in a particular way, which includes rhymes and rhythms. Each stanza has several number of lines and the syllables used may be different. Therefore, there are many styles of poetry.

Ballad: In ballads, each stanza has 8-10 lines, and the end consists of a shorter stanza. The same line repeats at the end of each stanza, and it is named a refrain.

Couplet: Poetry with two lines stanzas that rhyme between themselves is called couplet.

Quatrain: Four lines in a stanza makes for a quatrain, and the lines rhyme 1 with 3 and 2 with 4.

Cinquain: As the name says it, the stanza is made of five lines. A cinquain goes like this: the first line is a word, the second is two words describing the first, the third is three words and so on. The last line is the same as the first line.

Iambic Pentameter: Complex poetry is written in this style. In order to create a musical sound, the syllables are stressed in a particular way: one short syllable is followed by a long one, at the finish of each of the five stanzas.

Sonnet: It is a poem made of 14 lines, with a conventional rhyme structure.

Haiku: Japanese poems are named haiku and they are made of three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and they do not have to rhyme.

Free Verse: A more modern type of poetry, it represents to ability to express ideas and concepts, without following any strict guidelines. It is more like free spoken poetry.

Epic: The ancient Greeks used this style to tell their stories, like "Iliad", which is attributed to Homer; they are very long, covering even an entire book.

Limerick: A limerick is a short poem that has stanzas with five lines. The rule is that the first, the second and the last lines must rhyme, as well as the third and the fourth. Usually, each line from 1, 2, 5 has 7-10 syllables and the other 5-7 syllables.
