Even from ancient times, roses were a symbol of love and romance, and they were offered as a sign of appreciation and admiration. Roses grow in the wild in one hundred different types; the flowers have five petals, but some other species have much more. Roses are red, yellow, pink or white, and their leaves have little prickles.

Rosa canina, Rosa dumalis, Rosa gallica, Rosa laevigata, Rosa multiflora, Rosa virginiana, Rugosa rose, Japanese rose are just a few of the different types of roses that grow all over the world. Some of them also hold more popular names, such as Rose gallica, that is more known as the French rose.

Alba roses grow in gardens and they can be recognized after their white or pale pink color; they bloom only one time per year.

The Damask rose is a types that is known from 1254, and its thorns are seen as being more dangerous than in other types of roses. They only flower during the summer.

China roses grow in East Asia and they flower many times during the summer and the autumn. They are little and their flowers do not smell as strong as other roses.

Bermuda roses grow in Bermuda, but they are less resistant and plant parasites may affect them very bad.

On the coast of Madagascar, Bourbon roses are found; their purple cane and their climbing shrubs are distinctive traits.

The Noisette roses are known for the large clusters of flowers they produce since spring until autumn.

Moss roses bloom once, and only some of the variations are known to bloom repeatedly.

Gallica roses are spread in central and south Europe; they bloom once per year, and their flowers are red, crimson, maroon or deep purple.

Centifola roses or cabbage roses, as they are called, bloom only once and they are a result of Damask crossed with Alba.

Portland roses appeared as a mix from China roses and European roses. When created, they were the first roses to give flower more than once; they carry this name after the Duchess of Portland.

Tea roses come in yellow, white and pink variations, and they are obtained as cross of China roses with Noisette or Bourbon roses. You can recognize them from the rolled backed edges, and the pointed tip of each petal.

Hybrids were obtained through the care of breeders. Today, many roses that grow in gardens are results of different crossings, and they are derived from the older types of roses. Hybrid Tea roses are very popular and their flowers have beautiful colors, such as apricot, copper, lavender, gray, yellow, brown or they are bi-colored.
