Take your dog for a walk. Usually, house dogs must be taken outside twice a day. This habit will assure your pet enough exercise that will help it get rid of constipation. Along with walking, put him on a healthier diet. For instance, you can add a little bran in its food, as bran is known for its qualities against constipation. You can try to add psyllium to the dog's food, because it will cause it to have a softer stool. Give it a teaspoon of psyllium a day and let it drink as much water as it needs to get rid of constipation. Another product that can be used successfully in your dog's constipation problems is mineral oil. You can add two teaspoons, twice a day, to your pet's diet, but for one week only. Another method is by softening the animal's food with a little bit of water, or, if the dog is old, try add some raw meat and vegetables to its diet. Do not forget that your pet needs a lot of care from your part. Because they tend to lock themselves, groom him properly, especially if the dog has long hair, as this can be a reason for constipation. Then, assure that no hard or harmful materials are in its way, as the animal tends to eat anything that it can chew. Also, some medications or stress can cause the dog to suffer from constipation. Do not get your dog used to people's food, as it can be an important difference between what you eat and what is good for your pet. For instance, foods made of flour, sugar, rice, dairy and high protein can cause constipation in your dog. Do not give him ice cream, cookies, bread or chocolate, if you want to alleviate such effects. Its diet needs to be rich in fibers and liquids in order to prevent dog constipation. Another cause for dog constipation can be an inflamed colon, in which case you must go see the vet with your pet. If it suffers from mega colon, as this ailment is named, the dog is unable to release the feces and it becomes constipated. The vet will give your dog the proper treatment to help it regain its health. Remember that your pet is depending on you for proper care.
