Dog Depression - Truth or Myth?

Dog depression is a very real diagnosis that is being made more and more these days. Dogs are very sensitive animals and they are able to sense changes in their life that doesn't work well for them. Many of those things we can't do much about though. For example you may have a dog that has been with the family for many years. So when your child goes off to college the dog becomes depressed that their companions is no longer around.

Some dogs become depressed when their environment changes. If the family has to move then every effort needs to be taken to help them get used to it as soon as possible. The family should take measures to be sure their familiar items are moved along with them. This will help to give the dog comfort. It is also common for female dogs to become depressed when her pups have been given away.

When a dog spends a great deal of time with another dog it can be difficult for them to be separated. If one of them dies the one you have left can become very depressed. There are some signs of dog depression to watch out for. A dog that was once playful may spend much of the time lying around and napping. Look for changes in their appetite as well because most dogs that are depressed won't eat much. If your dog used to wag its tail each time you can around and now he could care less there is definitely something wrong.

Yet these same types of changes in the behavior of a dog are similar to various medical problems. That is why so many owners will take their dog to the veterinarian when they see such symptoms. It can be expensive to get such tests done and then nothing comes back out of the ordinary. Think about the behavior of your dog. Did something significant occur around the time that such changes became evident?

Try to spend as much time as you can with your dog when depression is a possibility. Try to hand feed it. If you don't think your dog is drinking enough water then you need to use a dropper to put it into their mouth. Try to play games with your dog and even introduce another dog for companionship.

Make sure your dog also gets enough exercise. Exposure to sunlight can help to improve their mood. Take your dog for a walk each day and this will help. Talking to your dog and softly rubbing them will also help them to feel a strong connection with you. Your continued efforts will help your dog to rebound from the depression in time.
