Dog Training For Dummies
|
Your very first step when training your dog is to start the training as soon as possible. Puppies of course, are far easier to train. If your dog was adopted, it may take some patience on your part inorder to train them successfully. Even if you've welcomed a puppy or a mature dog into your home, it's highly recommended that you train it as soon as possible. For example, if you do not want your dog to sit on the couch, don't allow it to from the very start. Numerous dog owners have issues with their new dogs because they allow them to do things that they are later annoyed by. Similarly, consistency is key. It is always a good idea to establish a routine for your dog. All in all, you should give food to and walk your dog approximately the same time daily. Dogs tend to react well to structure and deviations from this can stress them. If your dog has a high temperament, you may want to start your dog off with small obedience training sessions. It is important not to flood your dog with too much information at once. Start only with the basics, such as sit and stay. Never shout at your dog. Most animals don't respond well to harsh actions. If your dog does something that isn't pleasing, simply tell them "No" in a calm firm tone. Ignore any less destructive behavior, for it's not something you should make a big deal about. Domesticated dogs naturally want to please their owners. Therefore, praise for the positive behavior and a lack of reaction for the negative should be enough for your dog to understand what is required of it. It's important that when training your dog, it sees you as the boss. As pack animals, wolves (a domestic dog's ancestors) work as an efficient hierarchical group. Put simply, every pack must have a leader and, in this instance, it needs to be you. Some trainers and owners believe that 'alpha rolling', which mimics the behavior of dogs and wolves in the wild, is an effective way of asserting authority. Futhermore, simple measures tend to have a equally successful response. For example, during your dogs youth, it is recommended to take its bowl of food while it is eating. Sometimes, you may decide to take your dog's favorite toy away. Only do this briefly because most dogs won't become aggressive and whatever you took away from them can be replaced with praise. If your dog reacts to you by barking or growling, take away their food or toys more often until they get the message that you are the one in charge. Try to remain calm and patient throughout your dog's obedience training. Dog training provides the perfect moment for you to bond with your dog. If you make the process fun and entertaining, your dog will most likely be willing to follow your every command.
