Doing your best in graduate recruitment
|
Everybody expects to read up on the companies they interview with, but go the extra mile, don't just rely on google. See if you can get hold of current staff and get some opinions and ideas, maybe call there marketing department to find out about future plans, try speaking to one of their customers. Going the extra mile again demonstrates strong work ethic and the qualities graduate recruitment agencies really want to see. 2) Try an find someone who has been through the process before. Once you've home in on your career choice and made that initial application, try and find somebody who has done this before. It may sound simplistic, but wouldn't an exam be easier if you were able to speak to someone who had just sat it before your went in? You may be able to track down an existing employee in your general research about the company, be sure to remember to question him on the graduate recruitment process and what tips they would recommend. If you have gone through a graduate recruitment agency, they will likely have had people through the process before, what can they tell you and suggest, or can they put you in touch with anyone who has been through the process. 3)Prepare a plan Employers like to find people who go that extra mile. One way in which you can stand out as being one of these people is to do something that hasn't been asked for which will stick in their mind. Research and prepare a plan as to how you will be successful within your first 6 months in their job. Print off enough copies to hand out to your interviewing panel with your name clearly marked on it. Not only does this demonstrate going the extra mile, but it also leaves something to make you more memorable whilst they see other candidates, a basic sales trick. 4) Buy yourself a new suit. Not perhaps as daft as it sounds. We've all had experiences of knowing somebody by sight for a while before finally meeting them, only to think, 'they not quite what I thought they were'. First impressions are critical, if it's bad, it doesn't matter how good you are face to face you may struggle to turn around those initial thoughts your scruffy student appearance has created. Remember the old phrase 'I am therefore I will' ? Well dress and behave like you've already got the job and you'll like the results. 5) Get as much work experience as possible, the more varied the better. Take note of the skills you learn and use and in particular the lessons you learn in each job. Graduate recruitment companies not only want bright people, but people who learn from their experiences and build on them. Work experience is your chance to demonstrate transferable skills, but also that you are able and willing to learn. As a final benefit, working alongside studying shows commitment, organisation and work ethic, all qualities your graduate recruiter will like. There are no shortages of graduates looking to embark on their careers, but there are shortages of good graduate jobs, so it's highly competitive, the winners will likely be the best prepared and the ones who want it the most.
