Don't Lay Your Wood Shingles Until...
|
If you want your roof to look even and clean then you need to learn the basics of setting up for the roofing process. The first thing that you need to do is lay your courses. This is what will tell you where to put each shingle as you are working. Without these guides you will be hopelessly guessing all the time and that will only lead to one thing: disaster. You can lay your courses with a simple chalk line. You probably already have some chalk laying around the house but if you don't just take a quick trip to the hardware store to get some. It is cheap and it will save you an enormous amount of money in repairs down the road. All you have to do is put the shingle against the gable and then measure out for its width. Then go to the top of the roof and do the same. Now every few inches or so keep doing it and making a mark. Once you have done that you can simply line them up and draw a line. This will give you a good solid line that you can follow as you are laying down the each of the wood shingles. While you are roofing your home be sure to take note of where you will need to put your flashing. This is a crucial step in any roofing job. Without the flashing you are still going to have water going to all the wrong places so be sure to take note of this. Roofing your home with wood shingles is just like any other shingles in that you need to take care that you have everything lined up just right. If you have just a couple of shingles off you would end up with a gaping hole where there shouldn't be one. Measure everything carefully and then do it again just to make sure that you have not made any critical errors.
