Eczema Herpeticum - A Serious Condition

Having eczema can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, but it is rarely life-threatening. If you develop eczema herpeticum, however, things become much more serious. This condition happens when the herpes simplex virus is introduced into a regular eczema lesion. It is not only more painful, but it can lead to skin infections and internal infections as well. The symptoms of regular eczema are red, scaly patches on the skin that tend to itch, and can get sore from too much scratching. Possibility of infection is there if the scratching isn't kept to a minimum, but with the right topical medications this problem is usually not too serious. With eczema herpeticum, however, the introduction of the herpes simplex virus makes infection much more likely and, unfortunately, a lot less localized.

Symptoms of eczema herpeticum include a rash that can cover a wide area, fever, and fatigue. Since these symptoms can happen with other conditions as well, you may not recognize what it is right away. What you need to remember if you have regular eczema is that there is always the possibility of contracting eczema herpeticum. This means that when you experience any unusual symptoms, herpeticum should be one of the first things that you consider. As serious a condition as it is, you should always err on the side of safety without worrying about seeming paranoid.

If you contract eczema herpeticum, you need to have it treated as early as possible. Letting this condition go too long without treatment could mean damage to internal organs. It is not something that you can ignore; your life may depend on seeking medical help right away. Treatment usually consists of proper doses of acyclovir or some derivative of this medication. Your doctor will most likely start the treatment before the herpeticum is even completely diagnosed; it is that important to start as quickly as possible.

As serious a condition as eczema herpeticum is, it can be kept under control as long as you work closely with your doctor. At the first sign of an outbreak, you and your doctor need to take action. Outbreaks of this condition, if left untreated, often turn into other serious conditions such as strep infections. One of the best ways to control the herpeticum is to control the primary condition, which is the eczema itself. Follow to the letter every treatment that the doctor prescribes for you, and don't be afraid to ask about any new treatments that are available for eczema.
