Edible Birdhouse

Birds are a great addition to any yard providing some additional relaxation and some entertainment value too. Getting a little closer to Mother Nature can be a lot of fun! And what could be more fun than providing an edible birdhouse?

These houses provide both shelter and food for the birds that take up residence. Watch the flock grow as the house shrinks. It's great! Made from a variety of materials and feed foods but commonly made from pine or cedar covered in moss and then covered with millet, corn grits, oats, and other birdseed. Very nutritious!

And there are all kinds of shapes and sizes available so choosing the perfect house isn't a problem at all. Sites like The National Geographic site, What Ever Works, and even eBay have a terrific selection of these whimsical bird houses.

So what makes these houses so special? There's no question about the number of unique houses available online and the ease of availability to whatever type of house you want. But the edible ones are by all means the most unique and the most functional.

Sure they might not last a lifetime but they provide local birds with not only a home but a nutritious daily diet that they can't resist. What could be more in touch with nature?

And if you don't want to buy one why not make your own and have some fun with the project? You will need a large paper plate - one of the sturdy ones, a hole punch, white glue, half pint juice or milk carton, 1 cup peanut butter, ½ cup flower, 2 tbsp. cornmeal, six graham crackers, ice cream cone, birdseed, dry cereal, raisins, nuts, twine, scissors, and a mixing bowl and spoon.

1. In the rim of the plate punch three holes so that they make a triangle.

2. Rinse the carton and then glue the clean, dry carton to the paper plate just off the center mark. Let dry.

3. Add peanut butter, flour, cornmeal and mix in your bowl until well blended and stiff.

4. Add just a dab of mortar to the back of 4 of the crackers and then attach them to the carton.

5. Use the other 2 crackers to build the peaked roof for your house.

6. Frost the sides of the house and the roof then decorate with all that delicious bird seed, cereal, nuts, raisins, and whatever else you have.

7. Tie a piece of twine through each hole that you punched and then tie the three pieces of twine together to form the hanger.

That's eat you've just built an edible birdhouse in little time at all. So whether you decide to build your own or buy one that's all ready to go you can find everything you need online at one of the many great sites.
