Effects Of Water Pollution: What Do They Do To The Environment?

The chemicals used in agriculture and other human activities determine water pollution. The effects can be seen later on.

When rain falls on the ground, it takes the dirt and the silt and transport them into water. Once there, these elements get stuck on the water body, and then the aquatic plants are no longer able to get the needed sunlight. As the action of sun rays is elementary for their survival, they begin to die. Not only plants, but fish and other organisms can die by smothering.

Oil becomes very dangerous when it gets into the water. Animals that get oil into their system are very likely to perish. The areas that are heavily impregnated with oil become a real liability for the ecosystem in that region. Oil that gets on the feathers of birds makes their movement difficult, and, if they try to get cleaned up, they die. This is one of the most feared killer from all the pollutants.

Not only animals and plants, but people, as well, can develop serious illnesses because of contaminated water. When the water gets into the ground, then it can reach the human organism through drinkable water or food. The liver and the kidneys are often affected by cancer in these areas.

Nitrates that are used in agriculture can be deadly if they reach, through water, into an infant's body. Other fertilizers are very dangerous, as well. When cadmium enter the crops, the food eaten from those fields get into the liver and the kidneys, causing severe diseases. Mercury, arsenic and lead are often cause of water pollution. Pesticides that are used in agriculture and forestry are powerful poisons, as well.

The excess of fertilizers is often washed of the crops and the ground and enters the underground, where it can reach the valuable water supply. The toxicity of the water becomes very high and the water itself becomes a danger for humans, plants and animals. You can tell that a lake is polluted, when the surface is covered in dead plants and aquatic animals. The pesticides cause the water to become de-oxygenated, and, without oxygen, all creatures die.

Thermal water pollution is another drastic effect on the environment caused by the human hand. When machineries used in industries are cooled with water from lakes and rivers, the warm water gets into the stream again, determining an imbalance in temperature. The result is death of some species, that make place for others.

Heavy metals that reach the water sources are very dangerous. Entering the composition of the ground on which plants grow, they get into the food that men and animals eat. When such food is ingested, it can cause heavy metal poisoning.

When the water in rivers, oceans and seas gets polluted, then the flora and the fauna become seriously affected. Many species die, or develop severe disorders, as well as cancer. Even DNA can be affected by water pollutants. Less severe effects include vomiting and diarrhea.
