Effects of Insomnia - When it Gets Serious

Most people suffer from insomnia sometimes, and when they do they often don't think much about it because it's temporary. For some people, though, insomnia is a frustrating, ongoing condition, and the effects of insomnia for these people can be downright dangerous. One of the most important and healthy things that we can do for our bodies is sleep. Sleep helps our bodies heal from any major or minor damage they may have incurred, it lets our minds rest and recharge so that we can have the maximum mental clarity and it in fact lets all of our bodily organs recharge. Insomnia effects are symptoms of these processes being interrupted or prevented altogether. For this reason, when you start suffering from the more serious effects of insomnia, you need to seek help as soon as possible.

The effects of insomnia are many and varied, and they range from very mild symptoms to life threatening symptoms, depending on the severity. The human body can live no longer than 10 days without any sleep and death usually occurs before then. This is how important sleep is to our bodies. On the average we need anywhere from 6 ½ to 8 hours of sleep each night in order to function at our best. Some people seem to function fine on as little as 5 hours of sleep each night, and some need 9 or even 10 hours of sleep each night to be at their best. The effects of insomnia differ with each person as well.

The mildest effects of insomnia, which are usually present when you simply haven't had enough sleep for one or two nights, include tiredness, impaired ability to focus, and irritability. These symptoms normally disappear as soon as you get a good night's sleep. When you go for a few nights without getting enough sleep, the symptoms start to get more serious. Short and long term memory loss, increased irritability, impaired motor function, and even blackouts are not uncommon when insomnia goes on for too long.

If you've had one or two nights without sleep and there is a good reason for it, the symptoms that you experience shouldn't worry you too much. As soon as you catch up on your sleep and go back to a regular pattern, you should be fine. If the insomnia goes on for too long, however, you need to see a doctor. He will most likely prescribe some medication for you temporarily so that you can get the sleep you need. Once the effects of insomnia are under control, the doctor will try to wean you from the sleep medication.
