Elliptical vs Treadmill: The Ultimate Battle

Many debate today which of the treadmill and the elliptical is more efficient in burning calories. Let's take a look at this fitness equipment battle.

While treadmill had a lot of adepts, it seems that lately it began to lose terrain, as these users switch to elliptical. Because the elliptical allows for full body workout, this is looked upon as a more efficient method for burning calories.

Reports and studies have appeared to justify the differences between the two equipments, and comparisons were made. What was interesting, following the calculations researchers made, was that elliptical seems to end up causing you to lose more calories than the treadmill, but the results are the same.

Here are a few numbers, to get an idea: If you have 150 pounds and you exercise for an hour, by walking you will lose 189 calories, by brisk walking, 297, by jogging, 477, by running 783, and by elliptical, 774.

A treadmill, as well as an elliptical has different levels of exertion, but the comparison was not clear about at what level it was made. It seems that for the treadmill, it refers to the highest level of exertion, while, in clubs, many use the elliptical on the weakest option.

The answer

The truth is that you should get on the machine that you feel it can provide you with the best results.

For those that like to jog, run, or walk, the treadmill is more than enough. Plus, instead of having to run outside, in all kinds of temperatures and terrain conditions, you jog on a regular surface, with nothing to interfere with your experience. The machine will give access to different levels of exercise, so you will be able to adjust it according to your needs.

Elliptical, on the other hand, is much appreciated by those interested in combining workout for the upper and the lower body. Because you do not have to run or walk, while exercising, with the feet places on the pedals, your ankles, knees and back will not suffer from impact.

Here is how the elliptical works: you can do, in the same time, exercises for the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, chest, back, triceps and biceps. Fat burning is accelerated due to this composed exercise and you do put all your muscles at work in the same time.

The thing is that both machines can deliver calorie burning exercise, if you use them to the max.

Best buy

The elderly will prefer the elliptical, as their joints and ankles cannot support the strain provoked by the treadmill. On the other hand, heavy joggers will still stick to the treadmill.

Keep in mind that burning calories will not happen if you do not go the extra mile. You will notice that fitness equipment has a thing called "interval training"; this allows you to pass from one level of difficulty to another, in order to burn more calories. If you have medical problems, it is wise to consult your physician about your fitness routine, to prevent bad accidents from happening.

The answer is open. It is really up to you to choose the machine that will provide you with the type of exercise you want.
