In 1952 Britain was still bearing the scars of a World War. Proof was everywhere in war torn Europe. Open bomb sites with their crumbling buildings were set amid a new kind of design, half built blocks of apartments. These were the first signs of redevelopment. Throughout Britain, folks still produced identity cards and housewives queued on chilly pavements, nursing their ration books. Churchill, hero of the war, gave new hope to all when he was re elected to power under the Conservatives. Newly arrived back in Downing Street, London, Churchill commenced his reign of office by looking at the austere diet of the country. He called for one week's food ration to be set out before him. To his horror it was set out on a small tray. The entire rations for one week were what he would normally have anticipated to eat at one breakfast!

In the 1940s and 1950s American culture became very dominant in Europe. The influence of movie films and the prominence of film stars set the fashion in manners, make-up, hair and garments. It was generally thought that Hollywood glamour would rub off on you if you had the garments and developed the look. A method to achieve the look was to make your own clothes and customize them so they had a similar look to fashions worn by celebrities of the day.

Made in an expensive fabric such as shot silk home dressmakers could save pounds by making her own dresses.

The Second World War left women craving for glamour which they were able to recreate themselves. Dressmaking Pattern makers like Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity, style together with mags such as woman, woman's Own and Woman's Weekly all responded by making stylish dress patterns.
Just like now checks, spots, stripes, abstract designs, little flowers and giant florals all came in and out of fashion and as the styling that followed on from Dior's New Look survived for 10 years and more, change was shown often by the fabrics used.
Back in 1952 the fashion world succumbed to the new sweater girl and the more casual looks of jeans. Gradually the sweater got replaced by a T shirt and the about universal dress of the young became denims.
In 1952, Paris was still very much in style, even tho adapted by the design skills of ready to wear manufacturers.

Dolman sleeves, swing back coats and stand away collars were popular.
