Embossed Leather: How Do They Do It?

Embossed leather is very attractive. The good news is that you can obtain the same effect if you use the right tools and you have the hand made for crafts. Or, simply, if working with leather is among your hobbies.

The right tools

The Internet is a great source of information when you want to learn about leather craft, as well as the best stores that sell tools for this craft.

Embossed leather is the final product obtained when we create a three dimensional image onto this material. The proper tools for getting the job done are some embossing plates, a little knowledge, and all that you can find on leather craft from different sources, like the Internet.

To make an embossed image, you must apply pressure from underneath the piece of material and towards the exterior. There is another procedure, called de-bossing, where the design is pressed from the top into the interior.

You will need very little training in order to be able to create embossed leather. You will just have to buy some embossing wheels which come in different shapes, sizes and designs. There are many designs that can be embossed on leather, so you can choose those ones that fit your taste best. Usually, these wheels are made out of metal.

Whether you like flowers, or geometric figures, or animals, or other symbols, you can get them embossed onto your leather piece, just by using the right embossing wheel. Plus, their costs are low and they can be found almost in any craft or leather stores. If this is a hobby and not just a fling, then you will just have to buy an embossing wheel of good quality.

Tips

Here is how you create embossed leather. First, you must wet the material, so the design with dry stiff, making it to be more visible. In case that you do not have any embossing wheels around, just use some stencils.

Stencils are easy to find in many craft stores. With a hammer for embossing and stencils, just tap the design into the stencil, and there you have it: your embossed design.

It may take some time and practice to achieve the best embossed design. When you see a model that stands out from the leather very well, then you will know that the person that created that embossed design spent some time to get it done. Just learn how to handle the hammer and the stencils and you will be a great leather craftsman.

Blind stamping refers to embossing a leather piece, but without any colors on the model. If you want, you can add any colors you want after you finish with this.

You can also use stamping the model onto the leather. This works just like a rubber stamp on a piece of paper. This can hardly be referred as an embossing technique, as the model stands out because of the colors stamped on it, without being tri-dimensional.

The most complicated technique is tooling, an art that requires time and dedication to learn. You will need to learn how to use a chisel and a hammer to create particular designs.
