Embossing Powder: How To Work With Embossing Processes

Look no further if you need a clear explanation of embossing processes and tools required. Below are clear guidelines on how to do it, what skills are involved and some of the equipment you will need.

Make sure you have the following:

Heat gun

Embossing powder

Stamps ( you can make these yourself with the Beer budget or Champagne method)

Stamp pad

Selection of Card - color to suit

paint brush - small

If possible, some paper which has been made by hand and an embossing pen.

A good trial starting piece is to make a card. When you are familiar with the embossing process you can really start to branch out and experiment. Even to making really attractive Christmas decorations.

1. Choose the size and color of card required for the finished card.

2. Select the style of stamp which is suitable for the card.

Note that the color in the stamp pad is important as it will have an impact on the finished embossing. The best results will be achieved if the stamp ink is dark and the embossing powder light, or the embossing powder dark and the stamp ink pale. Light or transparent stamp inks are a good investment. You will soon become confident about using and trying out different inks and powders.

Use a water ink for good results and slower drying.

3. Select the powder and ink color which will give the desired results for your card.

4. Place your card on a backing sheet. Ink your stamp carefully and stamp the card evenly. Scatter the embossing powder so that the design on the card is completely covered. A light even cover is ideal. Carefully tip the residue of powder from the card back into the powder container or put away into a receptacle to keep for your next project. Tap the card gently to ensure that the excess has been removed. Switch on the heat gun and when sufficiently heated sweep the gun over the stamped area in an even motion and consistent progress to ensure even embossing and to avoid burning the paper. The design will be raised as the powder melts. When you consider the design is even, turn of the heat source and the card design is complete.

Even your first results will be impressive and the more you do the better you will get. Be brave and experiment with colors and powders and materials for a variety of unique and individual techniques and colors. The results of your personal creations will unleash your creativity, gain you much praise and give you much satisfaction.

The addition of an embossing pen can be very useful especially for embossing lettering, hand designed illustration or detailed work. The ink in the pen is clear and the procedure for embossing your lettering is as above. This is a useful addition to your tools and will extend your skills.
