Exams And Tests Preparation Tips

At a certain point, when it's time to take a test or exam, there is only so much studying and cramming you can do and then it's time to just take the plunge and walk through the door for the test. There are a few things you can do the day of the test, and as you arrive for the test that can directly improve your score.

First, you've probably heard it a million times, but do try to get a good night's sleep before the test. Staying up all night cramming will not do you any good. In fact, it just might make your situation worse. Put away the books and turn out the lights at a reasonable hour. If you don't know the material by midnight, chances are staying up to the wee hours of the morning won't help you any.

Before you leave for your exam, do a quick pre-check to insure you have everything you need. Double check for paper, extra pens and pencils, calculator, watch and any special materials you may need such as Scantron sheets, etc.

Be aware that if you arrive too early for an exam, it can be very tempting to take the opportunity for one last review. This is actually not a good idea, because it can stress you out. Instead, focus on remaining calm and work on releasing tension and regulating your breathing.

Choose where you sit very carefully. If you normally sit near a friend in class, look for somewhere else to sit on the test day. You can always chat with your friend later, but concentrate on your test and avoid distractions.

When you sit down to take the exam, take a moment to review the entire packet first; if allowed. This will help you to understand what is required of you.

Before answering any question or problem, make sure you have read the question thoroughly. Ideally, read it once and underline key words or phrases and then read it again for comprehension.

Multiple choice questions can best be approached by crossing off answers that are obviously wrong first and then analyzing the remaining answers. If you are absolutely unsure of which answer is correct, go ahead and guess. Your chances of getting a right answer automatically improve by marking some answer rather than no answer.

Don't fall into the trap of becoming distracted by looking around to see what others are doing or how they are reaction. Remember, it is only your own performance that counts here. Also make sure that you do not become stressed out by how quickly someone else finishes. There will always be that one person who seems to zip right through the test. Remember that just because they finished fast does not mean they performed well. And even if they did, that is no reflection on your own abilities. All that counts is that you perform well, regardless of whether it takes every allotted minute or not.

Use your watch to manage your time effectively. Quickly determine how much time you can spend on each question. In your preliminary review determine if there are questions or sections where you will need to spend more time than others. Proceed by answering the easiest questions first and then coming back to more difficult questions.

When parceling out your time, if possible, try to allow a few minutes at the end of the exam to review your work and make corrections as needed. Make sure you have answered all questions (if possible) and have included your name and /or student I.D.

Finally, when reviewing answers at the end of the test, try to avoid changing answers just because you panic. If you do not have a good reason for changing, then don't do it. Your first instinct is usually right.
