Executive Background Checks are Becoming More Common
|
These executive background checks can be fairly extensive and include a number of different elements. However, before a company does any executive background checks the potential employees must be notified that it will be done. The company should then get the job candidate to sign a disclosure form agreeing to allow the background check. This way there can be no complaint by the candidate that they were blindsided by the check. Once candidates have agreed to executive background checks then the first thing a company should look into is employment history. This involves checking with past employers about how a person did in a previous job and the reason they left the job. Checking a candidates credit history can also be a good way of finding our more about the character of a potential employee. Another area often checked is a criminal background check. However, employers have to be careful with this since the law only allows employers to turn down candidates who have convictions. There is a big difference between arrests and convictions and also between misdemeanors and felonies. While companies can refuse to hire someone convicted of a felony that may not be the case if there is just a felony arrest and no conviction. In some states even a misdemeanor conviction is not enough to refuse to hire depending on the crime the person was convicted of. There are a lot of companies that offer to do executive background checks including looking for criminal convictions. Many of these can be found on the Internet. However, it is important for employers to find those with a good reputation who know what they are doing. There are no national criminal databases available to employers so such checks must be done through courthouse records generally and the right company will do this.
