Exercise Treadmill

Originally, the word 'treadmill' referred to a kind of mill that was people-powered, in that people would power the mill by walking on the steps of a wheel that was connected to the mill. The power of a person's downward step is transformed into the work of grinding the grain.

Much more recently, of course, the term 'treadmill' has come to refer more often to a piece of indoor sporting equipment. Instead of the person performing work that is translated and expressed toward another outlet, with an exercise treadmill, the person doesn't do any productive work, beyond that of getting cardiovascular exercise in a limited amount of space.

That being said, treadmills can be a great tool. For one, an indoor exercise treadmill allows one to get exercise such as walking or running no matter what the weather outside is like. A sudden thunderstorm may alter your plans to go for a jog, but if you've got an exercise treadmill, you can always jog inside and without any special kind of clothing.

Another reason that many people like indoor treadmills is so they can exercise at the same time they stay near to other people or activities. For example, parents that have small children at home may find it easier to hop on the treadmill at home, than to bundle up the kids and take them out for a stroll or to the gym. While a nice walk with the kids is good exercise along with nice family time, sometimes we want to be able to get some cardiovascular exercise in and get on with our day.

Did you know that walking at a pace of only about two miles per hour doubles our base metabolic rate? While this may not sound too exciting at first glance, the implications are quite astounding. Think about it, a pace of two miles per hour is not enough to break a sweat. It's not fast enough to hinder conversation, yet this easy rate of walking is enough to double the amount of calories we burn 'just being'.

Instead of driving to the gym, changing clothes, working out, showering, changing clothes again and driving home, why not simply go for walks any time you have a conversation, either in person or on the phone. If you're willing to add some two miles per hour walking to your daily life, you may never need to change into sweats again.

The truth is that naturally, as human creatures, if we were not chained to our desks and sedentary computer lifestyles, we would automatically get enough exercise simply by walking to and from what needed to be done or seemed most interesting. Treadmills are a way to put walking back into our busy lifestyles.

To see the amazing effect that walking just two miles per hour can have, try this if you own a treadmill: Every time you would normally sit to watch television or talk on the phone, get on the treadmill. If you don't own a treadmill, walk outside or around your home. You'll see and feel a difference in the first several days. There's something about forward motion that keeps a human being feeling well.
