Explore A City's Downtown Area

Whether you're just visiting an area for a few days or you are a new resident, one of the most exciting things to do in any city is to explore the downtown area. Many major cities have experienced a resurgence in pride in their downtown areas and have gone to great lengths to restore and energize these once vital commercial districts. Taking the time to wander through a city's downtown area can yield a surprising discovery of quaint out of the ways shops, cafes and other surprises that will leave you pleasantly delighted.

Depending on which city you happen to be exploring, you may have the option of participating in a downtown walking tour. If you're not keen on setting off on your own, this can be a great way to explore the area and pick up some fascinating tidbits of information as well. The tours are usually guided and narrated by someone who is well versed on the history of the area and can provide great insight into the modern offerings as well.

If you're the adventurous type; however, there is certainly no matter way to explore a city's downtown area than by simply striking out on your own and letting your feet carry you where they may. The great thing about this type of self-tour is that you do not have to be restricted by anyone else's timetable and can spent all the time you like if you happen to stumble upon one fascinating location, such as a bookstore that specializes in rare books tucked out of the way.

Keep in mind that your self-tour may actually be more exciting and adventurous if you set out without a specific itinerary in mind. Most downtown areas provide literature on the businesses and sites you can expect to find, along with a detailed map, so you might want to pinpoint two or three locations you want to be sure not to miss; but other than that, be willing to be flexible. Remember that if you don't see everything in one day, you can always come again and explore to your heart's content.

Leaving your reservations at the door when you set out to explore a downtown area can also be a great way to discover things you might would never had learned. Don't be afraid to strike up conversations with the shopkeepers or people you might encounter on the trolley, if the city you're visiting happens to have one. Many times some of the most fascinating places in a city's downtown area are right underneath your nose, but it takes someone else to point them out to you.

Regardless of which way you choose to explore a city's downtown area, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to make your tour more pleasant and eventful. First, make a point to wear a good pair of walking shoes. Some downtown areas have retained the original street pavings, which could consist of everything from brick to shell, so this is definitely not the time to wear a new pair of shoes. You should also plan to bring your camera with you. Many downtown areas take pride in restoring some of their more historical buildings, so if you're a history buff, this is a great opportunity to see some fine architecture of days gone by. In addition, ladies should plan on leaving their purses and handbags at home. Not only do these become a burden to carry around during an extensive walking tour, but it puts you at risk for pick pocketing. Consider either a small backpack or money wallet that can be worn under your clothing. Finally, if you're planning to explore in the summer or in an area prone to year-round heat, don't forget to bring along your sunglasses and apply a liberal amount of sunscreen before you set it out. Otherwise your tour might end less than pleasantly.
