FHTM reps How to Present Yourself Utilize an Elevator Speech
|
Just what to say can be debated. The speech needs to be natural, not a string of tongue tied phrases but informative leaving the person wanting to know more. Look the person in the eyes. Show confidence but not arrogance.. Smile. Say something memorable and sincere. Let your personality show through. Talking face to face is the most effective way of communicating who you are and what you do, take advantage of it. Not a straight sales pitch but enough to keep them interested in you and wanting to continue to interface with you. Why is it called an elevator speech? The time you have to talk to someone is short, even in a tall building. It's that time frame, usually about 30 seconds that give this interaction the name elevator speech. It is that brief moment in time that you have someone's full attention and they are listening to you. Since you want to continue the conversation past the 30 seconds, consider asking a question at the end. This is harder to do than you think. Many experts think preparedness is the key, write down what you want to say. Eliminate business jargon, acronyms and unnecessary words. Don't bore or confuse your audience. Once you have created the speech you want, stand in front of the mirror and practice saying it out loud. Work at it until you have something that feels natural and you will remember to use when given the opportunity. Experts disagree on whether you should memorize your speech. Having a great elevator speech prepared is advisable, even if you are a natural at talking with people to stay on topic. Take the time to do some research. Look for examples of what other successful people say and at what the experts advise.
