The first purpose of the Great Wall, back in the days when it was built, was to keep the fertile lands where agriculture was being made extensively away from the prying eyes of invaders. Also, the wall was meant to keep the people from running away from China, when the times were tough. Stone, wood, grass and earth were the main materials used for erecting the Great Wall, and the construction began in the 7th century B.C. Every tower along the wall was manned by the military and, as military defense was the main purpose of the wall, any sign of attack could be signaled from one tower to another until the whole army was aware of the danger. Fire and smoke signals were used for this purpose. The wall was not built under one single kingdom; as China flourished, centuries and centuries, the construction of the defense mechanism continued with new sections. During Qin dynasty (221-206 BC), the wall was unified as a single entity, and all the sections were linked, while repairs were being performed.

The construction still continued for over 1700 years, and now, there is no wonder why the Great Wall of China still stands proud.
