Famous Army Forts Throughout History



Military camps and training grounds are often referred to as forts. These forms are areas where many military personnel live, work, and train. Many modern forts are set up like traditional communities. These forts make it possible for a member of the military and their family to live like normal everyday citizens.

Throughout the world there are thousands of military forts where military personal are trained and lived. There are a large number of forts located throughout the United States. Below is a list and a quick summary of some of the most well known forts in the United States.

A number of these forts are acting military bases and others have been retired and listed as a historical landmark. Many of the popular forts that are no longer working and active military bases are regularly open for tourism and visiting from the general public or schools.

The Alamo is located in Texas and used to be known as Mission San Antonia de Valero. The Alamo was where a history battle took place around 1836. The Alamo is now a historic site that brings in millions of visitors a year. With historical reenactments and a large amount of historical information the Alamo is a great place for families and schools to visit. Fort Adams was a working military base in Rhode Island until 1950. The military troops that were housed at Fort Adams fought in a large number of important battles. Fort Adams was popular due to its close location to the coast. Fort Adams can now be visited and guided tours are offered to tourists.

Fort Bedford is located in Pennsylvania and it was developed by the British. Fort Bedford did not last for a long period of time. The location of Ford Bedford is currently being used as a historical museum that is operated by local Pennsylvania county officials.

Fort Bragg is currently an active military base that is operating out of North Carolina. Fort Bragg is home to a number of different Armed Force members and groups. Fort Bragg is a place where military officials and their families live and work.

Fort Carroll was a historical base located in Baltimore, Maryland that no longer exists. The base was abandoned in the early 1900’s. Although is was significant in history because there weren’t a large number of other military forts or bases nearby Fort Carroll has since been abandoned and is currently not viewable by the general public.

There are a large number of historical and active military forts and bases all around the United States. Many of the historical forts have been maintained and owned by many nonprofit organizations or local or state governments. Many active military bases or forts do not allow visitors or tourists on site without being fully supervised and monitored.

There area large number of available resources to learn more about active military forts or historical forts that are open to the general public. Visiting a local library or using the internet are two of the best ways to retrieve information pertaining to famous forts in the past and in the present.
