Famous Trains

From the time that trains first emerged into the transportation system, they have captured the minds and imaginations of millions of people around the world. Although much faster methods of transportation eventually replaced trains in terms of trans-continental travel; there is still nothing that quite measures up to the romantic view of traveling by train.

Throughout the years the idea of traveling by trains has been romanticized in numerous books and movies. Many of the plots of some of the most famous novels and films of all time have been directly derived from well recognized train routes throughout the world.

One of the most famous of those train routes is the Orient Express. Through the years the actual route of the Orient Express has changed multiple times, it is still the most widely recognized train route in the world. Beginning in the fall of 1883, the Orient Express began its first run between Paris and Romania. The reputation of the Orient Express as a luxury train known for fine cuisine and comfortable sleeping cars reached its epitome during the 1930's; at which time the train saw its share of both nobility and royalty patrons.

The Trans-Siberian has likewise earned a world-renowned reputation. One of the most important features of this train route is the fact that it spans the large width of Russia; connecting the far eastern provinces of Russia with those lying closer to Europe. Due to the extreme length of the route; travel from one end to the other takes seven days and spans a total of eight different time zones. The Trans-Siberian is indisputably the longest continuous train service in the entire world. The route of the Trans-Siberian was built rather similarly to the transcontinental route in the US; with construction beginning at each separate end and meeting in the middle.

City of New Orleans is a train operated under the service umbrella of Amtrak that has gained fame from several different reasons. One of the most notable facts regarding this train is that the train route is featured in a folk music song that has been performed by several well known artists. The route travels some 926 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois. Slightly less than 20 hours are required in order to complete the nightly passenger route. A large portion of the migration of African Americans from depressed portions of the South to more Northern regions has been attributed to the route of the City of New Orleans and the inexpensive transportation option it provided. Most recently, the route of the City of New Orleans was disrupted for several weeks due to damage when Hurricane Katrina roared into New Orleans. Service to New Orleans was finally re-established in early October, 2005.

One of the most scenic train routes operated in the US, is run by the California Zephyr. This nearly 2500 mile route began operation in 1949, running from Chicago, Illinois to California. Some 2 ½ days are required to complete the entire route of the California Zephyr. The train travels through seven states, making twenty-five stops along the way.

Although it is no longer in operation, the 20th Century Limited earned the title of “The Most Famous Train in the World" during its run from Grand Central in New York City to Chicago, Illinois from 1902 to 1967. The train earned its notoriety due to the fact that it could travel the 800 mile route in less than sixteen hours; making it a popular favorite among business travelers.

No expense was spared in terms of comfort and luxury for the passengers of 20th Century Limited Guests quickly grew accustomed to the thick, red carpet that was rolled out for station stops and the luxurious Art Deco furnishings. Beginning on the maiden trip of the 20th Century Limited, male travelers were treated to carnations as they arrived while women also received flowers and perfume. This tradition continued throughout the entire 65 year duration of the trains' history.
