Fat Burning Exercises - Not All Workouts Are the Same

The media is flooded with a host of paraphernalia that are touted to be the best tools for fat burning exercises. However, the end user needs to know that not all machines and exercises are meant to burn fat - some increase muscle strength and mass or develop speed and power instead.

This means that if your objective is to lose weight and your growing midsection, you have to focus on the so-called "aerobic exercises," which are the real fat burning exercises.

The difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise

"Aerobic" simply means "with oxygen," while "anaerobic" means "without oxygen." This does not refer to your respiration during your workouts, though. They actually have to do with the need for oxygen by the cellular tissues to produce energy while you're exercising.

Aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, jogging, cycling, walking, or using treadmills and elliptical machines requires large oxygen supplies for your cellular tissues to provide the energy you need, simply because they are sustained. They are generally the slow but prolonged exercises that make use of major muscle groups.

When you undergo these low-intensity aerobic exercises, you enable your body to burn a larger percentage of calories and therefore lose more weight in the long run. Exercising at a moderate pace for a prolonged period increases your metabolism, which means that calories are burned long after the workout has been stopped.

To get your calorie-burning enzymes functioning, try starting with 20 minutes of a particular aerobic exercise and increase the duration and/or intensity as you develop your stamina. You can initially devote 3 days for exercising and work it up to 5 days a week when your heart rate starts improving.

For those who would rather stay indoors during a weight loss program (this is understandable, especially if you are conscious about being seen by your neighbors or friends, or if the weather does not permit walking, swimming, or running), the perfect tools for fat burning exercises are treadmills and ellipticals.

These are now available even in large outlet stores and can even be bought online. You can even find equipment from eBay that are almost as good as new. Treadmills and ellipticals cost between $200 to $2000 and above, but you can always start with an affordable model.

They're not just for fitness buffs; in fact, even senior citizens and those on therapy can perform their fat burning exercises safely and conveniently using these durable equipment.
