Fecker Rifle Scope: A Classic

Anyone who has been in the hunting world knows what a Fecker rifle scope is. This rifle scope was created by J. W. Fecker and was a high-powered scope of really great quality that was intended to be used for competition, or long-range hunting. J. W. Fecker was one of the best optical engineers of his time. He designed the second largest astronomical telescope in the world during his time. The Fecker rifle scope is now mainly retired from use, except for a few people who continue to use vintage target rifles when they shoot.

In 1922, there was an ad in a rifle magazine that gave a brief description of his new rifle scope. It had a ¾ inch clear-aperture objective lens, was 18 inches long, and had 6 and 10 power. Many advertisements appeared not long afterward saying that there would be fittings supplied so that people could use this scope in all contemporary mounts. One of the most unique characteristics of the rifle scope created by Fecker was that is had a sliding erector lens that was used for distance focusing. This unique focusing adjustment was a lot easier for a hunter to adjust and manipulate from their shooting position.

Every Fecker rifle scope was focused individually while at the factory for many different ranges. These settings were recorded with the serial number on the instructions that came with every rifle scope. One gun reviewer in 1927 said that the Fecker rifle scope was Without question the finest target telescope and mounts in existence. Before 1924, the Fecker scopes had to be adapted to fit the mountings of other scope makers. That year, he started offering his own set of scope mounts and they were made of Duralumin and were far superior to any other mounts on the market at the time. He surpassed that achievement by improving on that mount in 1925. He called this mount his Precision Mount.

All of the Fecker rifle scopes that were produced have serial numbers on them. This may seem like an insignificant thing; however, it was indicative of a respect for the workmanship that went into making the scopes. This was something that other scope makers didn't do. Later on Fecker began designing more powerful rifle scopes for competitive shooters and for long-range varmint sniping. In 1946, Fecker upgraded his 1 1/8" rifle scope model to 1 1/4" and he upgraded the 1 1/2" to 1 5/8". He did this to compete with Unertl's rifle scope. Fecker's scope mounts remained the best mounts on the market during his time.
