WateringYour new lawn is going to need regular and sufficient watering in order for the root system to properly take. Insufficient watering will cause your new lawn to fail but remember over watering also will.

You should set your sprinkler to the mist setting and then you need to water 4 times from 7 in the morning to 7 at night. If you live where there are water restrictions you may be able to get a permit for your new lawn that will exempt you from the restrictions.

MowingOnce your new grass reaches a height of 3 inches it is time to give it a cut. Never cut earlier! Use a good mower so as not to pull and uproot seedlings. If you planted sod you should not mow for at least 14 days.

MulchesIf you plant your lawn during the warmer part of the season place straw mulch over the area you seeded. This will help keep the soil moist and prevent burning as the seed tries to take hold. It also works good in windy areas preventing the seed from being blown away.

FertilizingFor the first 6 weeks you will not want to apply any fertilizer. After the 6 week mark you will need to start with a light fertilization that is designed for new lawns. It will have a strong nitrogen base. After the first application follow directions as per the fertilizer packaging.

Regular fertilizing is important not only for your new lawn but for your established lawn too. Fertilizing new lawns is only the beginning to having a great looking lawn forever!
