A wood deck is a perfect floor for this inside-outside area of your home. Now the question is whether you plan to build the thing yourself, or leave it to the professionals. If you've got a little extra time and some basic skill with basic tools, you might enjoy taking on the project as a do-it-yourself, weekend project. If you're interested in taking on the project of building your own wood deck, but have very little experience with woodworking or tools, you may wish to leave the job to professionals. However, it really doesn't take as much skill as you may be imagining. As long as you know how to work a saw and pound some nails, you'll be able to build your own wood deck. Keep in mind, like any do-it-yourself or home improvement project, the task of building your own deck will come with its own set of challenges and rewards. The success of building your own wood deck will depend largely on the attention to detail that you're willing to spend, as well as the amount of patience that you maintain. Unless you've built several wood decks, you'll probably want a guide of some sort to refer to during your project. There are several good books on the topic that you can buy or borrow from your local library. Look for something with many pictures. Also, you can find all kinds of helpful wood deck building information on the internet if you know where to look. My suggestion is to find a general do-it-yourself network or online community kind of website. Again, the more pictures, the better. At these kinds of websites you're likely to run into others that are working on similar projects. You may find it useful to share tips and opinions with these other people. Read through the wood deck building guide that you choose, or go over in your mind how the project is going to be organized. Obviously, you will need to measure and make calculations as to how much wood is needed, as well as buy and cut the wood and put the pieces together. Once you have finished your wood deck project, you should really consider protecting the deck with some kind of weather resistant material. There are many sturdy finishes that can be applied with a paint brush, and only need be reapplied every several years. Remember, there's no reason such a project as building your own wood deck can't be spread out over several weekends. Be patient, plan well, and before you know it you'll have a nice new wood deck that you yourself have built.
