First Grade Science Projects For Your Students

First grade science projects are not only fun for your students but can be fun for you, the teacher as well. Whether you have a class full of first grade students or you are homeschooling your first grader, these projects can be fun while teaching your child the basics they need to know in first grade. Just about any idea you can think of can be turned into a science project. Many teachers take the weekly reading and math assignment and use these as a basis of a science project.

If you happen to be reading about appleseeds to your students, then why not try growing seeds as one of the first grade science projects? Beans placed in a paper cup and held to the side with a wet paper towel is one very easy project to consider for first graders. Not only will the student be able to view their seed growing but it will grow extremely fast, making this project fun for the young student. Another type of seed to consider is a sweet potato. Drop the sweet potato into a plastic cup with water, let your student draw a face on the cup and soon your potato will grow hair.

First grade science projects that are great for showing effects on plants can be easily demonstrated to large groups of students and can be an ongoing project throughout the year. Place identical plants to grow in different environments, such as one in a darkened area and one in the sunlight. Have the children note the difference. Other situations can be placing one plant in the cold while the other is in the heat. How about one that is always wet and another always dry? Ask your students what they believe the outcomes will be.

Many first grade science projects can be observed by your student or they can actively participate. With Alka Seltzer rockets, the choice is yours. By simply taking an empty film canister and adding water and an Alka Seltzer you can show how a rocket works. First fill the empty canister half way with warm water. Drop in one fourth of an Alka Seltzer tablet into the water. Snap the canister lid in place and flip the canister over so the lid is now on the bottom. Place this homemade rocket on the ground and stand back. The sodium bicarbonate will push the lid off and send the canister flying. With various temperatures of water the rocket will go to different heights.

First grade science projects can be fun and exciting. Just use your imagination and get started!
