Fishtail Braid - Artful Elegance for the Hair

The fishtail braid is one of the loveliest ways to style medium length to long hair, though it can take a bit of work to learn how to do it. It most likely received its name from the way the "tail" looks after the braid is done, or the herring bone pattern that it has if done properly. As a type of braid, the fishtail is one of the most beautiful, and can be fashioned in different ways to make several styles. The fishtail braid can be done easily by starting with hair that is already put into a ponytail, or you can learn to do the more difficult version of starting from the hairline. Either way it is a fashionable look, and how you decide on braiding hair this way would depend on your preference.

Unlike the braids that most of us are used to doing, the fishtail braid starts with the hair being in two sections instead of three. If just learning, it is much easier to practice on pony tails than from the hairline. With the hair divided into two equal sections, you take a bit of hair from under the right section and cross it over the left, then a bit of hair from under the left section and cross it over the right. You repeat this, trying to keep the hair tight, until you are down to within about two or three inches to the ends of the hair. It's important with a fishtail braid to leave some hair free at the bottom and to secure it with a rubber band or strong clip so that the braid doesn't unravel.

Once you feel that you are comfortable with doing the fishtail braid on a pony tail, you can try graduating to doing it from the hairline. You can do one large braid or even two smaller braids, depending on the look that you want. Though it is possible to do this type of braid on your own hair starting with a pony tail, from the hairline you are almost always going to need help. Use the same method but divide the hair into the initial two sections starting very high up on the head and then go from there.

You can do many different versions of the fishtail braid once you have the basics down. Instead of making it tight right from the top of the head, you can make it looser on the top and then tighter as you get closer to the bottom, creating a softer look. You can have one braid or two braids. You can let the braid hang free, double it under itself and pin it up, or wrap it around and pin it up to the back. The versatility of this type of braid is one of the things that make it so popular.
