Five Ideas for Roofing Your Patio

Creating a comfortable and beautiful outdoor recreation area can be daunting. With proper planning, you can choose the perfect patio roof to complement your home and provide just the right covering for your outdoor enjoyment.

1. Polycarbonate Roof - Polycarbonate sheets are often used as patio canopies. They allow some light to pass through but block out the UV rays as well as the rain. If you want to reduce the heat as well, you can choose a bronze or white polycarbonate roof, which blocks light and heat. Polycarbonate roofs are best used with a slight vertical slope to promote rainwater drainage. Most companies offer a 10-year warranty for fade resistance and crack resistance.

2. Canvas awnings are also an option for a patio roof. With canvas you will have several styles and colors to choose from so that they become part of the dcor and can be changed when the dcor changes. You can install a rollaway canvas awning or have a freestanding aluminum frame with the awning so that anywhere in your yard can become your patio.

3. Aluminum patio roofs can provide a solid, more permanent cover in all types of weather. With baked-on color, this patio roof material is said to withstand rust and chipping, cracking, or peeling for 20 years or more. There are several styles available, and they can have gutters added to handle rainwater.

4. For that light, airy feel, you can choose an open lattice as your patio roof. These can be made of wood, PVC, or aluminum. Lattice offers shade without cutting out too much of the sunlight. You can find lattice in natural wood tones as well as a variety of colors to match your home.

5. If you want the best of both worlds, you can have a combination of lattice and solid roof. One side could be made of the lattice while the other side is solid polycarbonate or aluminum. Using the method, you can leave patio furniture under the solid side to offer protection from the elements year round, but you have the option of the light, airy feel of lattice adjoined to it.

These are just a few simple choices for patio roofs. Some will fit the style of your home better than others. Your choice will depend on what needs are most important to you: light, protection from weather, or looks.
