Five Levels of Human Needs and Desires
|
Basic, human physiological concerns comprise the lowest level. A leader must ensure that his employee's basic needs and comforts are met if they are to achieve their fullest potential. Basic survival needs such as hunger, thirst, fresh air, cleanliness and the need for social contact must be addressed, otherwise employees will be distracted and unhappy. For example, if an employee is working in a cold work place, they will not work as quickly or efficiently as they would if they felt comfortable. The second level being safety explains that human beings must feel secure. They must have a job and financial security. Employers must establish this security for the employees. When an employee feels that they may be laid off or fired they probably won't work as hard. They might just give up, or do something that gives the company negative attention. The third tier is all about one's desire to be loved, valued and having a sense of belongingness. It is of primary importance to employers to establish pleasant relationship with his employees and employees with each other to create common grounds in order to build a foundation of friendship. This is vital in creating a healthy working environment among employees, thus making their job more worthwhile and pleasant. This can be accomplished by scheduling events and matching up individuals with concurring minds on responsibilities in which they can establish connection. The fourth level describes that in a group setting we strive for achievement, feel emotions, and have a boost in confidence. We work hard to gain respect; in return we get a boost in our self esteem. An employer has the ability to create activities outside of work to encourage employees. No matter the activity, employees and bosses can have fun, and enjoy the bond between co-workers. This is what Maslow refers to as esteem. Once we have reached all of the other previous levels that were already discussed. We can finally reach the ultimate level, according to Maslow, which is self actualization. This is our ability to be creative and problem solve. It also deals with our feelings of morality. Only then, can we reach self actualization and become completely mature. About The Author: Daiv Russell is a marketing and management consultant with Envision Consulting in Tampa, Florida.
